Jacksonville native JJ Grey met Daryl Hance during the mid-‘90s and started the Mofro project. The band eventually changed the name to JJ Grey and the Mofro before releasing their debut studio album, Blackwater, in 2001. The album contains tracks primarily written by JJ Grey. By 2004, the band released their sophomore effort, Lochloosa, which served as an ode to Grey’s hometown in Jacksonville. The title track is about his home’s Lochloosa Lake, describing the place’s changing landscape. Grey showcased soulful lyrics and his beliefs as he sang about his home. During the late 2000s, the band released a couple of albums, leaning towards a more rock and roll sound. Country Ghetto and Orange Blossom spawned several hits like “The Sun is Shining Down,” “Country Ghetto,” “War,” “On Fire," and "Wylf (What You're Looking For).”
From 2010 to 2015, JJ Grey and Mofro remained a prolific band, belting out full studio albums and collaborating with other renowned artists such as Toots Hibbert from Toots and The Maytals and Derek Trucks from The Tedeschi Trucks Band. In 2015, they released their latest effort, Ol Glory, which contains rock, funk, soul, and gospel influences.
