Tenacious D is a comedy rock outfit comprising actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The duo got together after meeting at a theater company. They named their act Tenacious Defense but later marketed themselves as Tenacious D. In 2001, they released their self-titled album and went on tour to support renowned rock bands, such as Nirvana, Beck, Pearl Jam, and Tool. Due to Jack Black’s fully-packed schedule as an actor, Tenacious D couldn’t release their sophomore album until 2006. The duo dropped Pick of Destiny, which coincided with a film of the same name. During the promotion, they performed in fully-packed arenas, even almost selling out New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Six years later, their third album Rize of the Fenix, was released. The 2012 effort became their highest-charting album peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Top Comedy and Top Rock Albums charts. The album was also nominated for Best Comedy Album at the Grammy Awards. In 2014, Tenacious D was featured in the Dio tribute album, This is Your Life. Their recording for “The Last in Line” won them their first Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Tenacious D released their latest album, Post-Apocalypto, in 2018. The album entered the charts in eight countries, including the U.S. and U.K.
